£260M INVESTMENT: We know that Liverpool Football Club have quoted a figure of £150m to expand the stadium on two sides, is that really investment in the area or is it simply PRIVATE INVESTMENT IN A PRIVATE BUSINESS for increased PRIVATE PROFIT? We suggest that it's the latter. As for the remaining £110m, a lot of figures have been quoted in the media:
• Cllr Annie O'Byrne said £6m, • Mayor Joe Anderson said £20m - £30m • Kathy Cowell of Your housing said £10m - £20m We calculate a combined “maximum” pledged investment of £50m - £56m, which includes the £6m Cllr Annie O'Byrne quoted (surely this is included in the Mayors pledge?), leaving a shortfall of £54m - £60m? • Where has the PLEDGED investment money come from? • Who will fund the £54m - £60m shortfall? Liverpool City Council Budget 2013-14 - Liverpool City Council faces more tough decisions as they put together the budget for 2013-14. They have to find £32 million of savings and that’s on top of the £141 million worth of cuts made over the last two years. In fact, over the next four years, they have to find a further £149million of savings from a total spend of £480m – a huge challenge. The Council state that they will be doing all they can to make these savings through improving processes, stamping out inefficiencies, reorganising staff, using their buying power to get better deals, and bringing in more income. The budget approved for 2013-2014 includes increasing council tax by 1.75 per cent, some of which will be used for a hardship fund for the most vulnerable. The city council have agreed to consult on the future of libraries and review the operation of two loss making golf courses, two homeless hostels, payment for sheltered housing wardens and the youth service budget.
extremely difficult decisions. I will do what I can to support the most vulnerable people in our city. But in doing so, we’re going to be forced to do things we don’t want to do. My promise to you is that, in making these decisions, we will priorities the most vulnerable people in our communities and do what we can to protect them. We will use the massively reduced resources to continue to help those most in need. And we will do so whilst keeping our city a vibrant, attractive place where people want to come and live and work.
I passionately believe that our challenges are dwarfed by the opportunities. My vision of Liverpool is of a modern, ambitious city with a bright, bold future. A city which captures peoples imagination and stays in people’s hearts. I believe this vision is within our grasp. And I will do what I can, despite the difficult times we face, to continue moving Liverpool forwards. Mayor Anderson - Finch Farm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRv4W2bz4wo
