Welcome To Anfield 30 September 2009
By Graeme Donohoe Secret Millionaire hauled to safety while undercover on the hit telly show — after bosses feared for his LIFE.
Channel 4 producers were forced to pull ex-Para Tony Banks out of a rundown Liverpool estate when violence flared and he was targeted by yobs. Care home boss Tony — who is worth £50million — and his terrified film crew had to flee after local hooligans went on the rampage. They set FIRE to cars and houses and threw bricks at the building in which he was staying in the city’s Anfield area, home of Liverpool FC’s stadium. Falklands veteran Tony, from Kirriemuir, Angus, revealed he had to be moved because TV bosses feared his life was in danger. He said: “The place where I was staying in Liverpool is an absolute s***-hole — it was like Beirut - A lot of good people live amongst the chaos" . It’s the first time they’ve been forced to move a Secret Millionaire for safety reasons. The Anfield estate is derelict. They’ve been promising to regenerate it for years but all the houses are boarded up. The people of Anfield are like vampires — they only come out after dark. Things got really out of hand. It was just kids really but once they saw the camera crew it was a magnet for trouble. Every night derelict properties were being set alight. “I haven’t see the trailer for the show but I’m expecting them to be showing flames leaping from nearby buildings and all sorts of stuff.” Tony and his team lasted just three nights in the Scouse wasteland. He added: “The thing I remember most about Liverpool is the sirens. “It was just chaos. There were druggies trying to rob the camera crew’s cars. Then they stoned the back window of the house I was staying in". "After a third night of incidents, which meant I was getting just three hours’ sleep, a decision was taken to flee". “The risk was we’d be the next house to have a Molotov cocktail posted through the letterbox. I could see the fear in the face of the assistant producer — she was scared. I was wanting to go out and grab these yobs and kick their heads in but the TV crew made the right decision because it was deflecting from what I was there to do". “There was no point putting people’s lives at risk so the decision was made to retreat from the house.” By Graeme Donohoe |
